Harvest Home Thomas Tryon 9780394485287 Books Reviews

When it was first published over forty years ago, I had intended to read this novel, but life got in the way and time passed even though I was reminded every Fall in church when we sang the old Thanksgiving hymn.

Thomas Tryon has created a powerful thought-provoking work with this novel. His descriptions of characters, scenes, and situations are vivid and clear. The cast of characters is easy to become familiar with and the quiet, complacent feel of a rural New England village is drawn with mastery. It's not until the latter parts of the book when mysteries become revealed and the true character of the village comes forth.

I highly recommend this book. Don't wait forty years as I did.
Harvest Home is the best all time horror story. Thomas Tryon wrote a masterful thriller in this book. I have been reading this book since it was first published years ago. There's a lot of entertainment and surprises in this book. An excellent read!
This book was great, very chilling and surprisingly unpredictable, until after the Jack Stump incident...then it starts piecing together quickly...the ending was magnificent and creepy!!!
To be brief and to the point, I loved the way the book was written. However, a lot of the plot has me rolling my eyes and the subject matter at times was a bit much. I'm not into horror because it contains scenes of gore, or rape. This book, while had little gore, did have extreme sexual overtones that killed what would have made me get over the slight silliness of the plot.

I wouldn't steer clear from this author, but would not recommend this book to many, if anyone. If it wasn't for the at times beautifully written words, and dramatic scenes I would have given it 2 stars. If the plot revolved less around it being sexually horrific towards most of the end of the book, I would have given it 4 stars.

Overall, not horrible, but far from great or thought provoking.
Is corn scary? It is a rather bizarre plant. It grows tall and fast and has vaguely human qualities, like corn-silk hair and ears.

I never really thought corn was scary, until I read Stephen King's Children of the Corn as a teenager. King made corn creepy.

But before King conjured the Children of the Corn, author/actor Thomas Tryon's built Harvest Home (1973), a rural-gothic horror novel that was a major influence not only on King, but appears to have helped shaped the work of T.E.D Klein's The Ceremonies, and Ira Levin's novels of the occult.

Set in the fictional corn-fed farming community of Cornwall Coombe, Connecticut, Harvest Home offers a familiar set-up. Narrator Ned Constantine and his wife Beth are fed up with life in New York City, so they take their teenage daughter and move to the country. The Constantines fall in love with country living (for a while) and embrace Cornwall Coombe's quirky traditions. But, as Tryon notes, sometimes simple beliefs hide wicked and troubling superstitions.

Tryon borrows heavily from Fritz Leiber's Conjure Wife, (check out my Conjure Wife review here) with it's powerful cast of female witches and equally memorable cast of wimpy males.

There's a groovy `70s feel to Harvest Home. Like Happy Days, Harvest Home was created in the early `70s but reflects a simpler time in American culture. The novel has a cozy movie-of-the-week feel to it as well, which adds to the '70s vibe. In fact, Harvest Home was made into an NBC mini-series in 1978 called The Dark Secrets of Harvest Home.

Harvest Home is presented more as a gothic mystery than a straight-up horror novel. Tryon's tome is dulled a bit by time--and by forty years of rip-offs and imitators --but it still manages to hit all the right notes, especially during the racy climax and grimly satisfying Epilogue. Harvest Home finishes strong, and there are not many novels you can honestly say that about.

I've read all of Thomas Tryon's books and this is my favorite. It takes place in Cornwall Coombe, Ct., a quiet, peaceful, corn-growing, bucolic, and, frankly weird, community. The bizarre happenings and residents in this village sustain your interest until the shocking ending--something Tryon excels at. This novel is one of the best of the neo-paganism books that emerged during the 60's and 70's. I think it is better than "Rosemary's Baby', "The Wicker Man", or "Children of the Corn", all classics of the genre. Tryon's spectacular descriptive writing makes you feel as it you could smell the corn--or the blood. The second and third times I read this novel, I picked up hints that point to the shocking ending. Tryon also did this with his masterpiece, "The Other". He doesn't make it easy and I suspect he enjoyed teasing the reader with these convoluted clues. Great read for followers of the Mother Goddess, or anyone who likes a good horror story.
I first became acquainted with this story in the 1978 movie called "The Dark Secret of Harvest Home". It was one of my favourite movies as a kid and still is! Bette Davis made a splendid Widow Fortune - a creepy, class-act performance!!! I had been looking for this book on for about a year - I finally stumbled upon it! This is a fantastic read! As good as the movie was, the book is even better. I like it so much because it deals with the idea of the green man, or a harvest diety that requires blood - to me these are my ultimate horror reads!!! The writing is exceptional, the storyline gripping, lots of twists that you don't necessarily see coming, but not the aggravating twists that frustrate and do little to entertain. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to any horror/suspense/thriller/mythic mysteries fans!!! You won't be disappointed!!!!
