Summary: Kaitla Danann has lived the last 35 years of her life in the human realm. Having been raised in the foster care system, and having lived her life without a real family or friends, she trusts no one.

Unbeknownst to Kaitla, she is actually the long-lost daughter of Laird Caymber - from the realm of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Kaitla was hidden in the human realm when she was only a few hours old. Her father's arch nemesis, Ravon, meant to destroy Kaitla in order to prevent a prophecy that foretold of Kaitla killing Ravon in the future.

The time has come from Kaitla to learn of her heritage and travel home. It is only Caymber's most trusted advisor, Etain, who knows of the whereabouts of the girl. Etain and her great-great grandson Jared travel to the human world to find Kaitla, teach her the way to her power, and bring her back to her father.

Kaitla is certainly hesitant to believe who she is, but she accepts that she has never really belonged in the human realm. It is this realization that leads her to trust Etain and Jared. While she learns more about her home, she and Jared fall in love. Will he prove worthy of her trust?

As Kaitla embarks on her long journey home, Ravon will stop at nothing to prevent her from reaching her goal. He attempts many forms of manipulation and puts obstacles in her path. Even her own father has created issues for her because he does not approve of her match to Jared, and promised her hand to another man. It is up to Kaitla to rid the realm of Ravon's evil and put things back to right.

Review: There are sections of this book that are really well composed, interesting, and emotional. Kaitla is a likeable heroine, Jared is a courageous, romantic hero, and Etain is the perfect magical mentor-grandma. The storyline and challenges are well thought out and introduced. Stigall does a great job describing the realm and inhabitants, as well as the back stories for the characters. Another element that I really enjoyed was the Scot's burr of the otherworldly characters. Many authors present Scottish characters, but include very little accent to the dialog. I thought Stigall's Scottish written dialog was among the best I've read.

Unfortunately, the book feels like it is incomplete. There are giant leaps between one state of reality and the next, with very little transition between them. One minute Kaitla doesn't trust anyone, nor has she ever let a man touch her, and the next minute she is intimate with Jared. I felt that both stages were true to the story, but there was nothing to transition between the two. I was left feeling like I missed a chapter of the book where they actually fell for each other.

Additionally, Kaitla undergoes very little training to develop her powers once she is the new realm. One minute she doesn't have a clue what she is doing and needs to be instructed, and the next minute she is doing things that nobody else can do. Again, there is a lack of transition. And again, I felt like I was missing chapters in the book. Had this part been better developed, the book would have been much stronger. The magic elements themselves were really nicely described.

I'm sure I sound like a broken record by now, but the same transitional problem could be said for the conflicts in the book. Most of the conflicts were wrapped up so quickly that there was no time to worry that they might not work out well. Again, I had the feeling of missing sections of the story.

I don't think that I can recommend this book in its current state. However, I think that this author has a strong creative vision and definitely has writing talent. There are good bones to this book. If Stigall worked on expanding the transitions between events and stages in this book, I would love to read it again. There is a lot of potential here, but it isn't quite where it needs to be yet.

Awakening Her Soul to Destiny Deborah R Stigall 9781435729667 Books Reviews

This was a wonderful tale of magic, shapeshifters, fated loves, and curses that might keep them from ever being together. I loved this novel! Could not put it down until I finished it! If you a love magical folk tales with a terrific romance woven into the pages, you will love it too! Very highly recommended!
Let me start with saying I love fantasy books - fairies-magic-concept of other worlds.....
I started out very excited about the book and enjoyed it through the beginning, however mid way it just kinda died out, it was slow and not a lot of content that kept me engaged. It is a great story and I did enjoy the characters but it just didn't seem to deliever for me. When an interesting scene would start to build, it would end quickly and thats it, end of scene. It did pick up towards the end, but again the scenes were over almost as soon as they started and just not the depth they needed. It was okay.
Save your money and don't buy this novel. First of all the the leading guy or hero has sex with his own grandfather and tells half truths mixed with lies. Its not like he wanted to have sex with his own ancestor, bu still that was disgusting. I get that the author wanted one more conflict to keep them apart and then make up. That whole scene was so not needed. His grandfather disguised himself as his own grandson's ex-fiance in order to have sex with him and make the heroine belief he betrayed their love. There are other ways. The heroine just easily accepted that she was special and what they told her about her parents and their world. One moment she keeps telling herself she is unable to believe a person and then one second she believes every word they feed her. Third thing is that her father is totally weird, because he did and defied every thing to be with the one he loved but it was totally wrong for his daughter to want to be with the enemy's grandson. He would rather have his daughter be in a loveless marriage than be with someone she truly loves. There are many more reasons why not to buy this novel and that would take a long time. Felt cheated out of money's worth. Don't buy this book, seriously.
