The plot of the this book was a kind of pastiche of the works of Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte. The plot bounces around between three viewpoint characters. One is an upper class girl who's father is a magician who went insane, and who's family's money is running out. One is an upper class dandy who's life revolves around parties and fashion. The third is the son of a lord who squandered the family fortune on gambling.
The book is set in a weird alternate England, where the relative lengths of days and nights vary greatly on a day to date basis, where magic exists, and where old growth forests behave...oddly. Some of the smartest parts of the story were the ways in which the variable day lengths affected people's day to day life. The flaw was book seemed somewhat disjointed, with the entire plot shifting suddenly when the author switched what work of literature she was emulating. Also, characters seem to get sick too much and too conveniently.

The Magicians and Mrs Quent Galen Beckett 9780553589825 Books Reviews

Very strong references to Austen and Bronte, with its own twists. The second part felt a bit slow and out of place while reading it. The true romance felt a bit lacking and more of a given in regards to the reference than something developed on its own. However, it was a good read, familiar and different at once. The setting was fun and the main characters a delight.
Better than I originally thought, but still wish there had been more to the story and perhaps a more satisfying ending. Not knowing the fate of Mr. Lockwell nor the reason for the risings is a bit disappointing. However, the story held my attention and I read it all the way through, so it definitely merits at least 3 stars.
This book began like a combination of The Turn of the Screw and Jane Eyre. I am not a fan of Victorian horror and would have deleted it if I had anything else new to read. However, it ended up more like a Jane Austin set in a magical alternate dimension so I will buy the others in the series.
Interesting characters and a well thought out storyline. Abundant historical references and texture make this an interesting, if not at times difficult, read. The "magical" theme is in the background most of the time so if you like magical intrigue you will probably be a little disappointed. Still, it's a good read.
The ending of the book was excellent, but it took too long and took too much semi-relevant plot and detail to get there. I had a hard time avoiding an active dislike of nearly half the characters and found the oh so witty dialogue tedious and unfunny. Yet, the creation of the place of the action is imaginative and with two books more in the series perhaps all those flopping loose ends will be tucked in.
I was pleasantly surprised, this came in the bookbub email list and I think it was a $.99, SUPER worth it! I loved the first book so much I had to get the second. It was incredible reminiscent of a Pride & Prejudice remake with some Wuthering Heights added in, but with better character development, drama, unexpected turns, and some very interesting details, all with a hefty dash of magic and an interesting world not too far off our own, but different enough for added interest. Overall I was engaged and interested and was eager to read more, and sad to finish! I'll definitely be recommending it to others!
Would have been 4 stars except WAY too long. First 1/3 is Jane Austen, second is Jane Eyre, a flavor of Tess of the D'Urbervilles, and some other author I haven't read dealing with conflicted gay Regency men. I cared enough about the characters to finish it.
