Had potential. Plot was promising. Unfortunately it got washed out in writing. The only redeeming fact is, that a reader is learning things at the same time as the heroine, Annmar. But this Author got paralyzed by trying to obey the rule "show, not tell". Instead of quickly explain what is going on, she tries to show all in one unnecessary scene after another. The reader has to dig for the meaning, for secrets hidden in each action, gesture and word used. Pretty tiresome, and fast becomes irritating. The fantasy world is so strange, warped, convoluted and unbelievable, that a reader needs to go back few pages, to figure out what was supposed to be the meaning of some passages. Most heroes of this magic world are shockingly repulsive. In general, secret worlds of flora and fauna suppose to be morally pure. They can have some bad creatures hidden and lurking, but overall, they should ooze goodness. Provide balance for our "normal", "spoiled" world. In this novel, magic folks are almost vile. They hide stuff from each other, lie, conceal, control each other's actions, and only as an afterthought they work at some bits of goodness. Having to hide and protect the magic world does not mean having to be deceptive and suspicious of each other.
Romance and intimacy in this world is dirty and cheap. Author doesn't use vulgar language, but her people are crass and belittling when relationships are concerned. Nothing dreamy or pretty about physical coming together with others. Speed and flow of the book's action is stretched and diluted. Line after line of text describes what our heroine see and does, while the meaning of what she sees or experience is eluding her. She's constantly torn by "should I?", Shouldn't I?". The content of this book had a potential to be a nail biting, page turning, fast, and fascinating read. But ended up being a repetitive, boring, irritating, slow story. Author also allowed horrifyingly basic mistakes in grammar to slip in. After oodles of folks editing the work I shouldn't see in the text an expression "someone and I" being used instead "someone and me". And it isn't hard to know which goes where. The old trick advises to remove the"someone", check how it should be said when only "me/I" has to be decided, and then put the "someone" back. "I went to the movies", therefore "he and I went to the movies". "This isn't good for me", therefore "this isn't good for John and me". Simple, basic, easy to decide. Yet the bad choice. shows itself often enough. Not fair in a book for young audiences.
And last, but not least, the huge flaw is in the fact, that the story isn't finished.
Parts two and three are available now, so one can dish out seven dollars for the privilege of learning how this entire debacle ends, but it won't be me. I'm not interested enough. Not that curious. From the blurbs it is probably more of: "Should I?", "Shouldn't I?", "What is the meaning of this?", and the "five W's".
It is very sad, when authors forget, that writing for young adults comes with an obligation to do the best job possible. Of course not everybody is able to write a "Lord of the Rings", a "Harry Potter" or a "Hunger Games". But everybody should try for the same quality.
By the way, each part of "Hunger Games" is a finished story. Reader is given all the answers and every detail is finished and wrapped up. In this story, there is no ending, no explanation, just a cliffhanger.
Nope, not for me.
If you too like your stories fast paced, sense making and finished, skip this one. Leave the Author time to polish her craft.

The Unraveling just gets better and better as you read. You are introduced to characters in a typical Victorian era but very quickly the setting changes to a special magical place tucked away in England. Anmar, one of the main characters travels by train to a valley that not all can see the entrance to. The author describes what Anmar is seeing and learning about this valley and herself, that leaves the reader eager to find out more. The story is well written with foreshadowing as it unfolds, leaving the reader wondering what other magical things Anmar will find out about herself and this unusual valley. I am looking forward to reading more about Anmar's and Daeryn's story in volume
While I loved the characters and story, the magical part of this book is the setting and world-building. This is a wonderfully written book with imagery that will stick with you long after it's over. I'm not kidding about this - I had dreams of giant vegetables the night after I finished it. The author obviously did a lot of research and planning, and all the layers of this multifaceted society work together beautifully except when they're not supposed to. I also loved that the hero is a shifter, but not a typical wolf or other large mammal. Nope, he's a polecat. Yes, I had to look it up. They're cute weasel-type critters.

I can't wait to see how everything plays out in the next books in the series.
The author brings an exceptionally detailed world to life with a thoroughly engaging narrative and well conceived characters. Both exotic and familiar, the world described in this story is one you keep wanting to learn more about. The action and plot move quickly, yet the characters take time to reveal their inner thoughts and motivations. Although a romance, there is significant adventure and action. The heroine of the story, Annmarie, must adapt to a new, dangerous, and amazing world while discovering her own magical abilities, and while falling in love. Great book for young adults and older.
Full disclosure I know Laurel and had the honor/privilege of being trusted to beta read an early copy of this book. That said, this is a completely honest review.

Do not miss this book. It's not just another pretty cover. If you want a fantasy story that is unlike anything else published today, this is your book. Laurel Wanrow is a lifelong naturalist, and her love and respect for nature shines through in this story. You'll finish the book and will look at the beautiful natural world around us with new potential for magical possibilities (that and you'll be eager for the next installment). The story features two very likable protagonists; strong, compelling writing; and a full cast of memorable characters. It's an innovative mix portraying an agrarian life within a deeply magical secret world set in Victorian England. There really isn't anything else like it. I highly, highly recommend it to fantasy readers of all ages.
In a world rich with flavor, The Unraveling is a unique blend of fantasy, steampunk, romance, shapeshifters and action. You get drawn into Annmar's journey as she searches for not only her past but her future - a future filled with magic she never believed existed. Daeryn is wonderful and I love how well the author contrasts his "normal" animal shapeshifter world against that of Annmar's prim and proper English upbringing. Yet the romance growing between them is so sweet that you can't help but root for success, despite all the odds stacked against them.

I had the opportunity to read this story in beta and enjoyed it then. I love the changes and am even more excited about this fantastical world, the rich characters, and the intriguing story. My only complaint - I have to WAIT for the next book!!!
