I liked this book but it was a bit clichéd. It had an interesting plot but seemed more like it was written for the YA crowd. It was a bit too sweet and lacking in danger and character development.Jessalyne is a woman with magical abilities that allow her to heal and probably more although she rarely ever uses her magic since the clan of deer shifters she lives with is afraid of her magic. She learns that she is supposed to be an apprentice to the mage for the king. She hires Ertemis, a legion deserter, who is the legion's best assassin to escort her to the mage. He is known as the Black Death and feared by everyone. (Although we never really see why everyone is so scared of him). I would have liked to have seen more of the warrior that Ertemis was. He was supposed to be a tortured, assassin anti-hero but really just came across as a hero with none of the anti-hero, assassin or tortured part. Jessalyne was just a little too innocent and sweet which seemed a little lacking in depth. The romance between the two was slow and seemed to just appear at one point in the book. The resolution was just ridiculously simple and I would have much rather they figured out another way to be together then the way the author did. The fact that he was the king's son was just way to simple and obvious and a little to fairy tale for me.
It was a nice book but nothing I'll remember for any length of time. If you enjoy a sweet romance with some paranormal aspects and little to no sex then this is a good book. It just wasn't really my cup of tea.

Heart Of Fire A fantasy romance edition by Kristen Painter Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
It’s a rare novel that strikes the perfect balance of plot & romance, humor & drama, action & dialogue, but Ms. Painter’s “Heart of Fire” does just that, and wrapped in beautiful language and evocative prose as well.
Can not recommend highly enough!
7 stars! ⭐️ ⭐️
Enjoyed this book immensely but for one major flaw. The editing on this book is terrible. It becomes very annoying when you have to stop FREQUENTLY to restructure a sentence to make any sense of it. This was throughout the entire story. Other than that it was very entertaining. Would read again if problems were corrected.
Severe editing issues. I could not finish reading this book due to entire pages missing. Also the plot was too predictable and seemed to be very juvenile. I have read other Kristen Painter books that far exceed the writing in this book. The characters could have been plucked out of any fairy tale. Nothing new here.
While different from what I normally read, the quality of writing and characterization really drew me in and before long I was completely absorbed in Jessalyn and Ertemis' world. I loved how their relationship grew and developed as they faced their fears and insecurities to finally tell each other their feelings, with plenty of plot twists and suspense along the way. They are both strong lead characters, but Fynna almost stole the show - I just adored this little pixie! The dialogue was exceptionally well done, it was sharp and humorous and I laughed out loud on several occasions. And I loved the ending, the epilogue is awesome! This book is appropriate for young adults and fantasy lovers of all ages. I will say that there were several errors that should have been corrected before publication; however, the story and the writing were so good I will forgive the author and her editor in this case. I will definitely look for more books by this author.
Kristen Painter kept my attention as she wove her magic into this book. Her characters are strong. The book was an adventure and did what all Great books should do by taking me to a distant land on a journey where the characters in this case fall in love. I didn't really see all the twist and turns. I hope to read more by this author especially if other stories are as good as Jessalynn and Ertemis's. This book is definitely worth your time if you like romantic fantasy.
Let me start off by saying that I really liked this book. I like paranormal romances and medival romances. This story kind of put both together. The world building was good, and I always felt like I knew the surroundings. The hero was an aplpha male who was not afraid of his feelings. He was so gentle with the heroine, and the heroine was sweet and never annoying. The secondary charcters were interesting and made me want to hear their story as well. My only complaint was the lack of time the hero and heroine spent together. They spend a good chunck of time in the middle seperated. This seperation made me antsy and ready to move forward. Because of the seperation, the middle dragged a little for me. Don't get me wrong, it was still interesting, but I would have liked the characters to have more of a love story. There is lots of sexual tention but only one sex scene that may not even count, so if that bothers you be warned. All in all, this was a good read but could have been even better. I will read more of this author's works in the future.
This book ticks most of the boxes for a Mary Sue main character. She gets everything thrown at her without any effort on her part because she's pretty and sweet. Barf. Everyone loves her, men moon over her, none of her decisions drive the story line. She's pretty much arm candy whose virginity is placed on a pedestal.
Then there's the intrepid hero who we're supposed to swoon over. He's spent his whole life as an outcast, slicing and dicing people for money, until he trips and falls into being a prince (riiiiight). Then he mystically loses his ability to fight and can't manage to defeat his dandy of a brother and his vapid girlfriend. Sure. That makes sense.
I spent most of my time rolling my eyes and mouthing "really?" while reading this book. The formatting, grammar and word choice in this book were ATROCIOUS. Who edited the kindle version? Anyone? Did they own a dictionary?
