Rome The Eagle of the Twelfth MC Scott Books
I am a fan of M C Scott and have been since I read her first book quite a few years ago. After reading the Boudica series and the Emperors spy series I find I wait for each new novel to be published and thoroughly enjoyed The Eagle of the Twelfth. Great characters - a few we have met before and new ones we hope to meet again. The storyline keeps you guessing and by the time the last page is turned I found I was checking to see when her next book will be published. My thoughts on what is a good novel compared to a great novel are 'Do I wish to read this again? Answer Yes!Tags : Amazon.com: Rome: The Eagle of the Twelfth (9780552161824): M.C. Scott: Books,M.C. Rome The Eagle of the Twelfth MC Scott Books Reviews
This is a novel set in ancient Palestine, in the decades leading up to the 1st Jewish Revolt. It concerns the legionary Demalion and his service in the ill-starred 12th Legion of the Roman army. Demalion’s service opens as an assistant spy in a plot to influence the Parthian kingship. Unfortunately he is then transferred to the 12th, a unit with a poor record. There follows the efforts of the legion to build itself into a proper fighting force able to withstand the coming attacks. This is quite interesting, Roman training was quite brutal. There follows a number of vicious battles that see the legion decimated and then destroyed, ultimately and infamously losing its Eagle to the Hebrews. The final act is the desperate effort to retrieve it.
The first thing that must be said is that the story is written in the first-person, something I am not a great fan of. Nevertheless, Scott does do a good job of revealing legionary service with this device. The earlier Parthian episode is useful for introducing the complexities of the Middle East at that time and is revisited through the 12th’s sorry history. This said, the pride of the soldiers in their unit and each other is very clearly conveyed. It all makes for an interesting read, though some of the sexual aspects might not suit more conservative readers. It is well researched, as much as it can be at least and the speculations made regarding the history and the characters are all quite reasonable.
The author has valuable period info, and, as he states, the advantage of a generation since Eagle of the Ninth, by Sutcliffe, yet the book's plot meanders and wanders for so long in getting ready for something that just doesn't occur.
Great!!!!
